Riverside Rideshare Accident Attorneys

Riverside Uber & Lyft Accident Lawyer

Riverside trips run long: a car out to Ontario, a pickup at the Metrolink station.

Your seat decides the claim. Passenger, rideshare driver and injured bystander are three separate positions, each with its own insurer.

Can I Make a Claim After an Uber or Lyft Accident in Riverside?

Often, yes. It turns on who caused the collision, which of the three positions you were in, what the driver’s app was doing at the time, and how far the injuries end up going.

Start with the app. Uber and Lyft keep the trip record, and that record decides whether a personal policy or a commercial one is the starting point.

Then the place. City police handle Riverside streets, the Highway Patrol handles SR-91, SR-60 and I-215, and a ride finishing in Corona or Moreno Valley has left the city and picked up another agency.

The 91 sets the rhythm of the week. RCTC counts more than 300,000 vehicles a day on SR-91 between Riverside and Orange counties, and the worst of it runs eastbound in the late afternoon, when the commute turns around and comes home.

Down the middle of that sit the 91 Express Lanes, an eighteen-mile toll road built in the median and owned jointly by RCTC and the Orange County Transportation Authority. Drivers enter and leave near Green River Road at the county line. Which set of lanes a car was in changes where it was, and that is easy to lose in a roadside account.

The 60/91/215 interchange stands inside the city, finished in 2008 at what RCTC calls the heart of the Inland Empire. East of town, SR-60 climbs the Badlands, where a truck climbing lane and a descending lane were added.

UC Riverside publishes Uber and Lyft fares for its 26,000 students: roughly $45 to $65 out to Ontario, about half an hour away and the closest major airport.

Why the Uber or Lyft Driver's App Status Matters

California sets rideshare insurance requirements by app status, in Public Utilities Code section 5433.

App off

Personal policy

Not working. The driver’s own auto policy is generally the starting framework.

App on, no ride accepted

Reduced commercial cover

Waiting for a request. $50,000 per person, $100,000 per incident, $30,000 property, plus a $200,000 excess layer.

Ride accepted onward

$1 million primary

$1,000,000 combined for injury, death and property damage, acceptance to drop-off.

Two details that get missed. The $1 million attaches on acceptance, not at pickup. The uninsured motorist cover beside it, $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident, runs only while a passenger is aboard.

A limit caps what one insurer pays, not what the claim is worth. Learn how California rideshare insurance works →

Who Can Be Responsible for a Riverside Rideshare Accident?

Not every line below matters in a given case. The evidence sorts it out.

The Uber or Lyft driver

How they drove, and the app’s state.

Another motorist

Often the one who caused it.

The vehicle owner

Sometimes someone other than the driver.

An employer or business

If another driver was on the job.

A vehicle or component manufacturer

If the facts show a defect.

A public entity

If the road is part of it.

Another responsible person or entity

An owner, a contractor, whoever else.

A rideshare company is not automatically responsible for its driver’s negligence, but it must carry insurance that can apply to the claim.

What Compensation May Be Available?

  • Medical expenses
  • Future medical care
  • Lost income
  • Reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Property damage
  • Other supported losses

What it is worth follows the proof: the injury, the treatment, the care ahead and the work you lost.

Riverside Rideshare Accident FAQs

What insurance applies after an Uber or Lyft accident in Riverside?

It turns on the app. Switched off, the driver’s own policy starts things. Switched on but waiting, a reduced commercial layer applies. From acceptance to drop-off, a $1,000,000 combined limit can apply.

I was a passenger. What does that mean?

It puts you in the strongest of the three positions, because the trip was live. Fault still has to be proved, and the other motorist’s policy may answer too.

I was driving for Uber or Lyft. Can I claim?

You were working, and what the app was doing sets what is available. Waiting for a ping is a different insurance period from carrying a passenger, with different limits.

An Uber driver hit my car. What now?

App status is the whole question. The higher band attaches when the driver accepts the ride, so a car running empty toward a pickup on SR-91 is already inside it.

Does it matter that it happened in the 91 Express Lanes?

The law reads the same in the toll lanes as in the general lanes. The evidence does not. Entry and exit sit near Green River Road, which narrows where a car can have been.
