Torrance Rideshare Accident Attorneys

Torrance Uber & Lyft Accident Lawyer

A Torrance rideshare trip is usually one of two things: short and local, to Del Amo or one of the hospitals or the Honda campus, or the run north up the 405 toward the airport.

Either way, the claim turns on your seat rather than the route. Passengers, rideshare drivers and people struck by a rideshare car occupy three different coverage positions, and the driver’s app status at impact decides which policy is even in play.

Can I Make a Claim After an Uber or Lyft Accident in Torrance?

Often there is. It turns on who caused the collision, which of the three claimant positions you were in, what the driver’s app was doing, and what the injuries require.

Start with app status. It decides which insurance framework governs, and it is one of the few facts after a collision that exists as a record rather than as somebody’s recollection.

Then work out who holds the report. Torrance runs its own police department and covers the city’s streets, including Hawthorne Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, which are surface arterials rather than freeways. I-405 is Highway Patrol jurisdiction.

Uber & Lyft Accidents in Torrance

Torrance is organised around one street. Hawthorne Boulevard is also State Route 107, running north from Pacific Coast Highway, widened to eight lanes in stretches, and crossing Lomita, Sepulveda, Torrance Boulevard, 190th and Artesia. Del Amo Fashion Center sits on it at Carson, across roughly twelve thousand parking spaces.

The same grid carries the rest. Both hospitals are on it, Torrance Memorial on Lomita Boulevard and Providence Little Company of Mary on Torrance Boulevard. American Honda’s United States sales headquarters occupies a hundred-acre campus on Torrance Boulevard with about 2,400 people. The refinery on West 190th Street runs shifts, so Crenshaw and Western carry traffic at quiet hours.

There is no rail in Torrance today. Metro approved a K Line extension along the Hawthorne alignment in January 2026, over the city’s objection, but nothing is running yet.

The airport trip is still a car, about eleven miles, most of it the 405.

Why the Uber or Lyft Driver's App Status Matters

California sets rideshare insurance requirements by app status, in Public Utilities Code section 5433.

App off

Personal policy

Not working. The driver’s personal auto policy generally starts it.

App on, no ride accepted

Reduced commercial cover

Logged in and waiting. $50,000 per person, $100,000 per incident and $30,000 property damage, plus a $200,000 excess layer.

Ride accepted onward

$1 million primary

$1,000,000 combined across injury, death and property damage, acceptance through drop-off.

Two timing details matter. The $1 million band opens when the driver accepts rather than when a passenger gets in. The uninsured motorist cover beside it, $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident, applies only while a passenger is aboard. The legislature lowered that cover from $1 million in January 2026.

A limit describes the most one policy can pay. It says nothing about what a particular claim is worth. Learn how California rideshare insurance works →

Who Can Be Responsible for a Torrance Rideshare Accident?

Some of these parties matter here; the evidence says which.

The Uber or Lyft driver

Their driving, and the app status at impact.

Another motorist

Often at fault when the rideshare car was struck.

The vehicle owner

Not always owned by the person driving.

An employer or business

Where another driver was working then.

A vehicle or component manufacturer

Where evidence supports a defect.

A public entity

Roadway facts, and a much shorter deadline.

Another responsible person or entity

A contractor, a property owner, anyone else.

Neither company is automatically answerable for a driver’s negligence.

What Compensation May Be Available?

  • Medical expenses
  • Future medical care
  • Lost income
  • Reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Property damage
  • Other supported losses

What a claim is worth follows from proof: the injury, the treatment, the earnings lost.

Contact police when appropriate

From platform records, not roadside claims.

03

04

Which driver, and which others, actually contributed.

05

Identify applicable insurance

Every policy that might respond, including yours.

06

Document injuries and losses, then pursue the claim

Treatment, earnings and future care, then proceedings.

2 years*

Many California personal injury lawsuits generally have a two-year limitation period from the date of injury.

*Not a universal deadline. Public entity claims generally must be presented within six months. In Torrance that may be the city, Los Angeles County, or the state as authority for I-405 and the state highway portion of Hawthorne Boulevard.

Torrance Rideshare Accident FAQs

What insurance applies after an Uber or Lyft accident in Torrance?

The driver’s app status decides. Off, the personal policy is generally the starting framework. On and waiting, reduced commercial cover and an excess layer. After acceptance, a $1,000,000 primary framework can apply.

What if I was a passenger?

A passenger holds the strongest of the three positions, because the trip was live. Fault still has to be established, though, and another motorist’s policy may be in play alongside it.

What if I was the Uber or Lyft driver?

You were working, and the app sets what is available. Logged in and waiting is a different insurance period from carrying a passenger. Any rideshare endorsement can come into it.

What if an Uber or Lyft driver hit my vehicle?

You were outside the trip entirely, so app status is the whole coverage question. The higher band attaches on acceptance, and proving that from platform data is the work.

What if the crash happened while travelling between Torrance and Los Angeles?

The law is the same at both ends. What changes is who holds the report: a run up the 405 leaves Torrance police for the Highway Patrol at the freeway.
