How often have you driven by the most dangerous intersection in Los Angeles?
A recent USC study has identified South Figueroa Street and Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles as the most dangerous intersection in Los Angeles. The findings raise major safety concerns for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—and highlight the growing need for accountability and safer street design.
Crash Statistics at the Most Dangerous Intersection – Figueroa and Slauson
According to data analyzed by Crosstown LA from the Los Angeles Police Department, the intersection has seen:
66 serious crashes
17 felony hit-and-runs
7 pedestrians struck while on the sidewalk
Residents say reckless driving is common in the area.
“Just speeding past me and my parents,” said local resident Celeste Aragon. “It’s the most dangerous intersection —it almost always ends in crashes.”
Traffic Fatalities Now Exceed Homicides in Los Angeles
Safety advocates, including Damian Kevitt, executive director of Streets Are For Everyone, warned that while police focus on serious crimes, traffic accidents and fatalities continue to rise.
“For the first time in quite a while, Los Angeles has had more traffic fatalities than homicides,” Kevitt said. “People who drive dangerously know they likely won’t get caught.”
Calls for Safer Streets and Better Enforcement
Advocates are calling for the City of Los Angeles to invest in roadway redesigns and traffic enforcement measures to reduce crashes.
“Some of that can be done by engineering — you can re-engineer a road so that it’s safer,” Kevitt added. He also noted that the city could use unused funds from the 2023 speed camera program to improve high-risk intersections.
